Movement Emerging Thru Space

Day 2 began with somatic movement. Attention to sensation and internal space. We began to work from internal awareness and finding our way through an exploration of the mass and the content within the the body. Attempting to locate and awaken the parts and pieces that make up the human body. Through rolling and reaching both proximally and distally we began to add motion to the body. As we began to explore the extension of isolated parts of the body the transition between horizontal and vertical space began to occur in the meeting of the two planes. Movement from the standpoint of mobility and locomotion, moving from sensation and internal impulse was the priority.

The focus then was altered to an awareness of movement in relationship to space. This is just a reminder that you are not captured in one place, but the whole space becomes available for inspiration and curiosity. In this moment, i found a lovely duet in the middle of two curtains in relationship to somatic sensation of the texture on the skin, but also the exploration of the curves of the folds and the architectural shapes that began to formulate with myself in relationship to them.

Then the focus turned to the simple nature of creating movement based on space. I narrowed my focus for a moment to play with the question of what is rotation in space. And I really only breached the surface of what that could be, but I made some discoveries by beginning just with my eyes in space gazing toward the left of my periphery and followed the directionality that had been generated by that movement with my nose. I was really trying to isolate each movement to create clarity and articulation of the spine and the full action. When I had reached my full range of motion, my shoulders and upper spine followed, then my hips and my knees, and soon I was twisting to the ground and found that the rotation continued in the horizontal relationship to the floor. Soon I had come to a seat and the movement had finished in a very human shape. And then the rotation continued on taking a more human form, then the rotion morphed into something jerky and desperate.

There was a point at which I began swimming across the marley as if it the reflection of the light had made it appear as if it were water. There was a point at which I was playing with the linear bold lines in the room, the creases in the marley, the immense lighting grid on the ceiling, the vertical lines of the curtains. After playing with the geometric and slow, broad bold movement, I wanted to investigate something completely different. I tried to see and interpret every line I could possible implement into my movement, which turned into a very silly expression of quick and jagged, undignified wiggling and desperation to take it all in. I had a moment of studying the orb of light emanating of the bulbs and played with the idea of expanding in 360 degrees. I did another exploration on playing with the force of gravity and releasing tension, I was working on using skeletal structure to work against gravity and find the points at which I could defy that gravity and rise up. I found a moment of shared collaboration with another person raising their arm like it didn't cost them anything and my struggle had kept me from being able until i saw them just doing it. There were other lovely moments as well, I had a lovely duet with another woman who engaged in my same shape and we travelled across a portion of the room, taking in others shapes and trying to find the logic to their shape from my shape. Out of that came a connection to another man who had interpreted the fist that I had made after grabbing at something and interpreted it as an aggressive gesture that caused a shift in the quality of my shape, and then turned into a simultaneous release of that aggression and opening of the hand and new engagement with one another. Lots of beautiful things.

The focus began to be that of being yourself in space. There was a point at which a beautiful trio broke out that played with being able to see around others and ultimately found a shared weight draped kind of quality.
