SPACE: Through the lens of ARCHITECTURE
Space: The pursuit of spacial awareness. What is the point of talking about space? As a material and element of the theatre, in order to speak it's language and integrate the human story into it, we must at some point separate it out from the whole of the theatrical experience and look at it under a microscope. At some point it becomes valuable to ask, what is space really?Space is an immense concept to wrap the mind around. And as I write, I am constantly at odds with my lack of ability to clearly express these ideas. However, here is to trying. In order to particularize such a big concept, how about we look at space as architecture. As we absorb and interact with architecture we begin to define space through structures, features, and objects in relationship to one another. This investigation will lead to an awareness of the features of a stage and remove the man made hierarchy that the person down stage center is the only important, worthwhile thing to observe. As we finely tune our awareness of space, space becomes an incredibly generous and supportive scene partner with whom we are constantly connected to and sharing communion with. The performer in this state of awareness and connection can command the audiences eye even with their back turned to them. Our options on stage become vast.
